Von "Natural" zu "Supernatural"

Das neue Album der kanadischen Musikerin Basia Bulat ist "hoffnungsvoll, himmlisch, disco" und sehr empfehlenswert.

Basia Bulats Instrument ist die zitherähnliche Autoharp. Dieses schwer zu stimmende Instrument kann man nur mit einer Umarmung spielen. Mit ihren bisherigen Alben, dem Debüt "Oh My Darling", "Heart Of My Own" oder "Tall Tall Shadow" lebte sie ihre Folk-Faszination aus: "I was interested in aesthetic recordings that are more like documents and recordings that are natural", erzählt sie im FM4-Interview.

Auf Basia Bulats neuem Album bewegt sie sich in Richtung "modern and electric". Dabei beschreibt sie diesen Prozess als "going from the natural to the supernatural". Was aber nichts mit einer Künstlichkeit von überlagerten und überproduzierten Songs zu tun hat. Ihre Lieder sind als akustische Skizzen entstanden und haben im Studio ein Rock-Outfit verpasst bekommen. Noch immer live eingespielt, aber verspielter, von der Instrumentierung her auf jeden Fall abwechslungsreicher.

Sie habe unglaublich viel David Bowie gehört während der Arbeit an ihren neuen Songs, meint Basia Bulat. Mit ihr im Studio war der Sänger von My Morning Jacket, Jim James, den sie als Produzenten und Bandleader engagiert hat. An seiner Arbeit bewundert Basia Bulat, dass er sich mit seinen eigenen Alben nicht wiederhole: "He put together an amazing band, all people from Kentucky. They put their heart and soul into the record. I knew I wanted it to be more of a keyboard organ based record."

Weg also von der Autoharp. Ein Instrument, das andere Kräfte von ihr fordert als die Gitarre oder das Klavier. "I grew up playing piano and keyboard but I distanced myself from it for a long time. Especially from playing it live but recently I reconnected with it. I find it physically very different than playing autoharp or guitar. I really wanted something that felt grounded and steady but also like it was taking off into the air. It was fun to be able to use all sorts of analogue synthesizers but also set up a little keyboard world for myself!"

Dieses Gefühl vom "Abheben", das sie mit der Produktion und Instrumentierung erreichen wollte, passt auch wunderbar zu ihrer Stimme und macht "Good Advice" zu einem einzigartigen Erlebnis.

Als ich sie nach ihren Songs befrage, vergleicht sie diese mit Saatgut: "Growing like little plants at the same time. All the seeds went in at the same time and they all came out at different times." Ein erster Termin zur Saatgut-Beobachtung war das Kennenlernen im Studio von Jim James: bei den Aufnahmen zu "Infamous", als sie im Studio mit verschiedenen Tempowechsel experimentiert haben. Sollte es eine Ballade werden oder doch ein "Upbeat Pop Song", wie sie ihn Basia Bulat im Kopf hatte? Als sie hinter der Glastür verschwand, um den Vocalpart aufzunehmen und zu den Bandkollegen am Mischpult zurückkehrte, waren sie vor Tränen gerührt.

Das Herzstück und die "Identität" des Albums ist der Titelsong "Good Advice": eine sich langsam aufbauende Ballade und Basia Bulat, die mit sich selbst im Chor singt. "I think the whole record there is a lot of questions on the record and not necessarily advice at all! In the song I actually say 'I didn’t ask for it - I didn’t want it' and it´s a statement of empowerment in a way: I have all the answers I need and I don’t need to look outside of myself for any of it!"

Im Opener Track "La La Lie" geht es um den Moment, wo man nicht bereit ist, der Wahrheit ins Auge zu sehen. Ein Moment der Verblendung. Ja es geht um zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen und die verschiedenen Konstellationen, in denen man sich manchmal wie von einem Meteoriten erschlagen oder wie in einem Höhenflug fühlt.

Ihre Songs sind wie ein Kompass. Den Weg aus dem Labyrinth findet man, wenn man ehrlich bleibt, sich nicht verstellt und das sagt, was man fühlt. Und es auch meint. So verhält sich Basia Bulat auch zu ihren Songs:

"The only thing that matters to me when I´m recording or when I´m writing is if I believe myself when I´m singing it. And if I sound like I´m trying to sing then I don’t like it. It just has to feel real to me but that´s weird because how do you decide when something is real? You can only kind of know just by listening to it and by feeling whether it sounds right or there´s an error message!"

Gefragt, wie sie "Good Advice" mit drei Worten zusammenfassen würde, antwortet sie mit himmlisch, hoffnungsvoll und disco. Ein "Fool", wer sich das nicht anhört.
