Time is running out to save the African elephant, which could become extinct within a generation. Conservationists say one elephant is killed every 15 minutes and nearly 150,000 in the past decade alone. They are slaughtered for their ivory, which is mostly shipped illegally to China. It’s a trade highlighted in Austrian director Richard Ladkani’s new documentary The Ivory Game. On this week’s Saturday Reality Check Special we meet some of the protagonists in the struggle to save the elephants, risking their lives to infiltrate gangster circles to ensure the survival of an iconic species.
