• Populism in the USA

Populist politics has been on the rise in many parts of the world, including Europe, for quite some time. Now the phenomenon seems to have reached the USA in the form of Donald Trump. Richard Wike, Director of Global Attitudes Research at the Pew Research Center, offers an explanation for why this is happening.

• Uploading consciousness

Imagine a world in which you can upload you consciousness into a machine. It’s a thought that is as fascinating as it is scary; bringing with it many ethical and moral questions and challenging our concepts of what makes us who we are. Reality Check speaks to award-winning Canadian science fiction writer, Robert J Sawyer.

• Saving the Antarctic Ocean

An historic deal has been struck today to create the world’s largest marine protected area in the Antarctic. The agreement comes after years of diplomatic wrangling with 24 countries and the European Union signing on. Reality Check speaks to marine biologist, Dave Barnes from the British Antarctic Survey about the significance of the agreement.

• Disappearing wildlife

Global wildlife populations have fallen by an average of 58% from 1970 levels and we could lose two-thirds of our wildlife by 2020 if current trends continue. This is the startling conclusion in a recently published report by Living Planet. From Elephants in Tanzania to maned wolves in Brazil; from salamanders in the United States to orcas in the waters of Europe, all are threatened by human activity says Georg Scattolin from WWF Austria.

• Words, sounds and meanings

Is there a link between the sound of a word and its meaning? Why do different languages have similar sounding words for the same thing? For a long time it was thought that this was because the languages of the world share common roots but as Damian Blasi from the Max Planck Institute tells us we may have to re-think all that.

Wenn man Flüchtlingen eine Auszeit von ihrem oft recht tristen Alltag geben will, werden sie häufig auf den Fußballplatz mitgenommen. Elisabeth Marek hat sich was anders ausgedacht. Sie geht im Rahmen ihres Projekts the creative fillip jeden Montag mit acht afghanischen Flüchtlingen in die Wiener Boulderbar klettern. FM4 Draußen Reporter Simon Welebil hat sie begleitet.
