Close Up: Porträt Mia Wasikowska

with Steve Crilley
Today's stories
- US depleted urinium blamed for birth defects in Iraq
Doctors in the Iraqi city of Fallujah are reporting an alarming level of birth defects in babies born since the US offensive against the city in 2004. They say such defects used to occur once every few months, but now they see cases every day, and heart defects, for example, are 13 times higher than in Europe. Military expert John Eldridge tells Steve Crilley says it is very likely that not only depleted uranium, but other chemicals from weapons used in the battle for Fallujah are the cause.
- US foreign policy consultant says both the US and the EU expected too much from the Obama administration
The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were the source of unprecedented tension between the USA and the EU - and under the Obama administration things have certainly improved, but not as much as either side hoped. Robert Kagan is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and former foreign policy adviser to Presidential candidate, John McCain. He tells Joanna King that there are many basic misunderstandings in the transatlantic relationship, and both sides need to realize how the world has changed, and a strong and effective Europe is in everyone's interests.
- The "Sauerland Cell"
In Düsseldorf, 4 men have been convicted of belonging to a terrorist organisation, plotting murder and conspiring to carry out bomb attacks on US targets in Germany. Their arrests came after German agents had infiltrated the group and replaced the explosives with harmless fluids. This allowed the authorities to delay the arrests until the details of the plots were clear. Steve Crilley discusses the group and their plans with our correspondent in Germany, Michael Lüders.
- Iceberg threat in Antarctica
Glaciologists are anxiously observing an iceberg the size of Luxembourg that has broken off Antarctica. They say that icebergs that break off "tongues" of ice at the edge of ice sheets could have worldwide effects on sea levels. Kerry Skying talks to Neal Young, a glaciologist studying the new iceberg, about the effects and implications of this and other icebergs breaking off from Antarctica.
- Student protests
The major protests in the Audimax and around the city of Vienna may be over, but the reasons for last year's student protests remain unresolved. This afternoon, Science Minsiter Beatrix Karl and ÖH leader Sigrid Maurer are meeing at a podium discussion moderated by FM4's Michi Fiedler. Michi explains to Steve Crilley what the discussion is about and how he thinks it will go.

FM4 Draußen Winterpanorama: Zu Gast in Kärnten
