Today's Webtip: Learn with the Smithsonian
There have been a massive amount of really exciting online teaching and learning tools developed in the last couple of years. The number of resources available to the curious is massive, and the quality of those resources growing.
But this is only the beginning. The world is full of source materials that haven't really been touched, teachers and teaching plans that haven't been networked, and state institutions that could be coordinating those developments that haven't even thought about it. There is going to eventually be a massive disruption in the educational publishing industry. Someday. In the meantime, we can enjoy the ride until things build up.
One of the most recent additions has been provided by the Smithsonian Institution. They have been digitising their collections for quite some time, and already put together a few initiatives to encourage teachers to use those materials for teaching pans. But now, after five years of development, they have opened up a central platform that ties everything they have together for teachers.
Learninglab.si.edu is both a tool and a platform, a resource for teachers and students alike. And for those who just want to watch some interesting videos, you could also check out the Smithsonian Education channel on YouTube.
