Today's Webtip: Growing up Star Wars
Star Wars was probably the biggest shared cultural experience I have ever been part of. Is. I was there, in line, for the opening in 1977, and have seen every single film in the theater when they came out. I filled the time in between releases reading the books, collecting the comics and playing with dolls.
It probably made Santa's work pretty easy.

It certainly was fun. As much as a part of me wants to rant against an abusive culture of consumption, there is that other part of me that looks back at the sheer joy I had as a kid playing Star Wars. Sometimes with stuff that was bought, sometimes with stuff that was made, and sometimes with nothing more than a very vivid imagination.
And that is the part that has really enjoyed browsing through stacks of photos of other kids and star wars.
