Today's Webtip: Pixar in a Box

Pixar and Khan academy want to teach you about making movies.

It seems like there isn't anything you can't learn online. Which means at least one of the idealistic dreams of a lot of the early web heads has come true. Many of the best offerings are even free, which makes it two.

And one of the best online teachers has gotten together with one of the greatest animated film makers to try to teach you how to do it.

Pixar and Khan academy have put Pixar in a Box. Which is actually a webpage, but I guess the videos are rectangular, which is sort of boxy.

It's a bit chirpy, but that might just be the aftereffects of Pixie Dust.

Anyway, it starts out with rigging, moves on to environment modelling and includes animation and rendering as well. The box contains 7 subjects so far, but more are in development, as this appears to be a multi-year partnership.

It's not really going to give you the skills to walk into Pixar and demand a job, but it is a very interesting example of explaining math concepts through practical usage. Because, yes, they are teaching the matches behind the magic.

That's pretty sneaky.
