Today's Webtip: From AIM to IRL love

A sort of sweet reminder of love online.

Remember 1997? That was the year AOL Instant Messenger came online. It wasn't the first internet based instant messenging service, but it was one that would eventually become much more iconic than most of the others.

It also coincided with a massive influx of new internet users, many of whom didn't have access to SMS, cell phones, or even their own phone line. Free, instantaneous, (somewhat) private messenging must have been amazing.

As someone who only had a shared landline as a teen, and could only message other BBS users, rather than classmates and random normals, I can only imagine it. Or read someone else's account.

Like the one at dailydot.com it also gave the old fogeys at metafilter.com a chance to share some ancient memories, which was almost as much fun as the article itself.
