Today's Webtip: One Smartphone per Farmer?

The Facebook-Loving Farmers of Myanmar.

Remember Nicholas Negroponte's One Laptop Per Child?

The most recent hardware version of OLPC is basically a ruggedised android tablet. The project is still running, and volunteers are apparently still needed.

The idea of a technological revolution through low-cost hardware was a rather interesting concept that almost went somewhere. And then the smartphone revolution came.

A revolution that was interesting enough in Europe and the U.S.. But in other parts of the world, it was astounding. One of the best places to see this change might be Myanmar. A country that only recently had it's first open elections, where many villages still have no electricity, and where SIM cards went from costing $2000 to $1.50 inside of a year.

So what is it like for people who had never been online to suddenly drop into the reality of Facebook and co?

Interesting.
