Slipknot kommen!
Am 26.Jänner werden Slipknot und ihre Tour-Panzer bei der Wiener Stadthalle einfahren und ein Konzert geben. Das letzte Mal waren sie in Österreich als sie beim Nova Rock Festival aufgetreten sind. Dass sie den Slot nach Motörhead bestritten haben, war für Sänger und Songschreiber Corey Taylor schon damals „very weird“. (Interview mit Dave Dempsey vom Nova Rock 2015 hier zum Anhören)

Monate später, in einer Welt ohne Lemmy, hab ich dann das Vergnügen, mit einem gut gelaunten und eloquenten Corey Taylor per Telefon verbunden zu werden. Ich stochere nicht in den Wunden rund um das Ende von Motörhead, sondern widme mich der Frage, was diese Band überhaupt inspiriert. Abseits von der Kollegenschaft aus der Genre-Nachbarschaft.
Slipknot ist "the most successful underground band of all time just for the fact that mainstream is scared to death of us!" bemerkt Corey Taylor und klärt mich über die Erfolgsformel seiner Band auf: "The more noise that the fans make the more the world has to turn around and deal with us. To me that´s the sign that you´ve achieved something. That´s the sign that you helped create something that can never be denied. Can never be ignored! It can never be marginalized or taken for granted because the fans keep you where you are!"
Seit 2001 finden sich Slipknot regelmäßig auf Grammy Nominierungs-Listen, zehn Jahre nachdem sie für "Before I Forget" ausgezeichnet wurden, könnten sie heuer eine Statue für entweder Best Metal Performance ("Custer") oder Best Rock Album (5: The Gray Chapter) abstauben.
Bis es soweit ist, rollen sie aber wie gesagt in der Wiener Stadthalle an und geizen in der Vorplanung auch nicht mit Superlativen. Sie sind ja schon eine "bombastic" Band aber für die neue Tour haben sie die Köpfe neu zusammengesteckt und ihr Live-Konzept neu überdacht. Corey Taylor dazu: "We´ve completely remodeled and restructered what we´re doing! Visually and sonically! It is going to be a whole different staging. A little more modern. Technologically it is going to be in your face and exciting. And that is saying something for us!"
Aber was inspiriert Corey Taylor eigentlich beim Musikmachen? Ich mache mich auf einen Horror-Film-Vortrag gefasst und muss Gott sei Dank enttäuscht werden. Warum? Hier die drei Inspirationsquellen des Corey Taylor:
1. Hip Hop
"I don’t know if you´ve seen the movie “Straight Outta Compton” - it´s a fantastic, fantastic movie. So good. I remember seeing it and it kind of helped me to rediscover my love for old school hip hop. It sparked my memory of growing up with that music. And that´s kind of gotten me listening to a much more rugged form of hip hop - where it´s abrasive and in your face and so full of life! And that´s kind of been an inspiration to me to kind of take a new look at the way I write music! Every once in a while you have to remind yourself why you make music. I love to make a certain type of music. It´s got ta be music with passion and heart and watching that movie really inspired me to reinvest myself and get right back into it and just leave nothing on the table!"
2. Stephen King´s The Stand
"I famously reread Stephen King´s “The Stand” every year. It´s my favourite book. It´s basically the director´s cut version which has a 100.000 extra words in it. It´s one of my favourite stories and one of my favourite books! I´ve had the same copy that I bought when I was younger – a hard cover. So I read the same book I read when I was 13. It´s one of my favourite novels! It´s weird I always find something different when I read it. I find a scene that is completely different and it´s very strange to do that. Especially I´ve read it so many times so when I do find something different or a description that hits me a certain way - it´s always a surprise to me and it´s really cool!"
3. Musik!? Neues Rad am Wagen!?
"Musically? I´m still waiting. I don’t know if it´s so much a new genre I´m waiting for or the next band to give me a boost! I think it´s one of the reasons I keep coming back to the music that I grew up listening to – because I know for a fact that will get me going. That will give me a boost of energy that I just haven’t been able to find from a lot of newer bands! There´s one new band that I found in the last year: Royal Blood! I looooooove that band. It´s so riffy and just so dirty. It is so refreshing. They didn’t invent the wheel but they put on a pretty good damn tire on it. It´s really really good. I´ve been telling my friends about Royal Blood a lot and we´ve been jamming that a lot lately!"
