I absolutely love Star Wars! It’s got everything!
Yes indeed. Action, great music, memorabilia, exercises classes.

Wait… exercises classes?!
Obviously. This is a multi-billion dollar film franchise, so naturally it has absolutely everything under the sun. Or throughout the galaxy I should say.

Star Wars fans or well-attended exercise class?

I thought the most exercise I’d ever get from Star Wars was tipping popcorn into my mouth and raging at Jar Jar Binks.
Well don’t take any of that rage into the class. You’ll be training to be a Jedi. And as we all know, a Jedi should not hate, lest they turn to the dark side. Or more popcorn.

So can I learn to move objects using the force?
Sadly that’s not real. Or at least nobody has worked that bit out yet. But, you do get lightsaber training, and that’s pretty cool.

Obviously they’re not real either.
Well no. But that’s probably a good job. Otherwise the news would be littered with stories of people being cut in half whilst exercising.

So even with all this make believe, is it popular?
Of course it is! Have you ever seen any of the cosplay conventions. Some Star Wars fans take this lifestyle more seriously than . After the release of the latest film, more and more classes have been popping up all over the place.

And how do the classes actually work?
It looks pretty cool. You go into a darkened room and swing a lit-up, weighted toy lightsaber around to improve stamina and upper body strength. The moves are based upon fight scenes from the film, although quite how well you could replicate a duel on the Death Star in a sports hall in Simmering, I don’t know. Still, none of us are JJ Abrams, so we shouldn’t be too worried.

And is it successful?
For fitness, probably. For revenues, definitely! It’s got everything an exercise craze needs to have, and more! It takes its teachings from a well-regarded, mysterious culture a long way away, and it’s based on a hugely successful franchise.

Is that a dig at yoga?
Nope. It’s simply praise for Yoda.

Do think:
Exercise, I must.

Don’t think:
Not today. The force is not strong enough with me.
