A lack of cool heads in a crisis....
A Russian protester holds a placard reading 'Erdogan is a killer' while picketing the Turkish Embassy in Moscow.
Strong nationalist tendencies
Moscow is now accusing Ankara of shooting down the Russian plane to protect oil trade with IS. The pointed accusations from both sides are raising further tensions, which is a far cry from how things were just a few weeks ago between Russia and Turkey.
Then, Mr Putin & Mr Erdogan shared a podium to discuss trade and extend friendly relations at a bi-lateral summit. In fact both countries share a great deal, when it comes to business and trading deals. Turkey is (or rather was) a top destination for Russian tourists, along with Egypt. As our Moscow correspondent Charles Maynes pointed out to us, both men, Erdogan and Putin are very similar in their outlook and have cultivated a strong man image seeped in nationalism, with a throw back to a time when their countries had strong empires. This narrative doesn't bode well for cool heads to reign when there is a crisis.
