Today's Webtip: Brandalism

protest as illicit ad-campaign. A way around the protest ban in Paris.

Today is the kick-off of the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Frequently referred to as COP21. The official aim is to agree a global legally binding climate treaty. One that might manage to reduce global emissions to a point that could help keeping global warming down to a rate that might avoid the worst case scenario.

But I don't need to explain that here. Barbara Köppel has put together a primer that should get you up to speed.

The conference is not uncontroversial, and not just with climate change deniers. Other activists concerned with climate change have criticised the event. Many are concerned that civil society is being shut out of the discussions taking place. And due to the state of emergency in Paris, their voices won't be heard through protest either.

But posters might be seen...

Brandalism

Brandalism has found away around the protest ban by put up posters in Metro advertising displays. 80 artists took part in the creation of the "Ad" campaign that features quite a bit of criticism of the companies and politicians activists accuse of greenwashing.

The press release for the Paris action explains:

"Following the tragic events on 13th November in Paris, the government has chosen to ban the big civilsociety mobilisations - but big business events can continue. The multinationals responsible for climate change can keep greenwashing their destructive business models, but the communities directly impacted by them are silenced. It's now more important than ever to call outtheir lies and speak truth to power. We call on people to take to thestreets during the COP21 to confront the fossil fuel industry. We cannotleave the climate talks in the hands of politicians and corporatelobbyists who created this mess in the first place."

Whatever your stance on the issue, many of the posters created for this action are worth viewing on their own right.
