Today's Webtip: Online Censorship
Like so many things these days, censorship has been privatised. Most people in the U.S. or Europe are unlikely to run into official government censorship on a regular basis. Private censorship on the other hand...
The problem with sited like Google, Facebook, or Twitter censoring things is that it's so hard to know it's happening. Every now and then a larger trend will bubble to the surface, and the online community can react to things like nipple gate, but many acts of censorship remain in the dark.
Which isn't too surprising considering the generally intransparent nature of these sites policies.

And that is where the EFF comes in. They have started a new project too try to bring more transparency to the actions of these providers. Or, to use their words:
"Onlinecensorship.org seeks to encourage social media companies to operate with greater transparency and accountability toward their users as they make decisions that regulate speech. We’re collecting reports from users in an effort to shine a light on what content is taken down, why companies make certain decisions about content, and how content takedowns are affecting communities of users around the world."
