Turkey

Reality Check looks at the stunning, unexpected victory for Erdogan's AK Party.

Turkey ... and what now?

The AK, or Justice and Development party of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has just under 50% of the votes and enough seats to form a government on its own. Analysts say voters were swayed by the AK slogan of stability after some of the worst bloodshed in Turkey in decades - with clashes between security forces and PKK Kurdish rebels and a massive suicide bombing the government blamed on Islamic State militants.

However Erdogan’s party has fallen just short of enough seats to call a referendum on its own on changing the constitution and increasing the powers of the president. The pro-Kurdish HDP saw its vote drop slightly, but it has crossed the 10% threshold needed to enter parliament. The centre right opposition CHP won around quarter of the vote and the nationalist MHP will also take seats in Ankara.

And as far as the AK is concerned, what provoked this amazing turnaround in the fortunes of Erdogan's party? For some thoughts on that, we turned to our correspondent in Istanbul, Dorian Jones.

The Russian passenger plane

The Russian airline, MetroJet, has blamed what it calls "external activity" for Saturday's plane crash over the Sinai Peninsula which killed 224 people. The disaster happened shortly after the Airbus 3-21 took off from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. A senior executive of MetroJet., Alexander Smirnofff, has ruled out a technical fault or pilot error. The Kremlin is warning against speculation but says no theories should be ruled out. So how much of a challenge will it be to find answers as to the cause of this crash? We spoke with aviation expert David Learmont.
