Today's Webtip: Railgun

A rather ambitious tinkerer takes Quake out of the computer.

I'm a bit torn about this story. Which isn't too surprising since I'm torn by a lot of things. First Person Shooters for example.

As a kid in the U.S. I grew up playing cops and robbers, cowboy and indians, and all sorts of other things involving toy guns and weird morality plays. I also learned to abhor violence.

So the fact that I enjoy things like action movies and first person shooters always leaves me a bit, twisted.

As does the fact that despite hating the idea of using weapons, I am always fascinated by things like functioning blasters, lasers, and now, railguns.

Because someone actually went out and made a functioning railgun rifle.

He has posted a series of photos of the build with some explanations of the photos. And I find it fascinating. It is weird watching the fictional future unfold, and I am absolutely amazed by what people can put together in their basements, but it's also a bit horrifying.

Now if we could just get people as motivated to make the post-scarcity civilisations of Star Trek and Ian Banks's The Culture a reality.

Or a functioning hoverboard. I would be cool with that as well.
