The slow slide of the SPÖ
Against most expectations, yesterday's election in Vienna delivered a clear win for the SPÖ, and the much heralded "duel" between Michael Häupl and Heinz Christian Strache seems to have fizzled out at the last minute.
The reds lost a few points, the blues gained a few points, and everything looks set for business as usual to resume under a red-green coalition.
But will it? Although the SPÖ losses were far from devastating, they were the latest in a long run of losses that are sending a clear signal to the red leadership. The party needs to change, and update its image, its issues and its platforms, as it moves forwards.
Analyst, Thomas Hofer, says the SPÖ "is a very old party, and they have to change that. They also have to change their issues, and their issue positions."
