Victory for Max Schrems at the European Court of Justice

ECJ: Unsafe Harbour

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled today that the agreement allowing companies to freely transfer data to the US is invalid as it does not adequately protect consumers. The ruling represents a major victory for the Austrian Max Schrems who brought the case. We speak to Thomas Lohninger, head of the data protection NGO “AK-Vorrat.at” about the significance of today’s ruling.

Air France protests

Top executives from Air France were attacked by angry protesters yesterday and had their shirts ripped off their backs. The protesters are angry about plans by the airline to slash some 2,900 jobs and cut some routes. Paris correspondent Paul Schofield says that this is yet another low point in French labour relations.

Syria’s warring parties

Russia increases its airstrikes in and Iran is sending in ground troops both to support the Assad regime. Meanwhile the various anti-Assad rebel groups are considering forming an alliance and both NATO and Turkey are deeply concerned about Russian violations of Turkish airspace. Military analyst Paul Beaver says the United Nations is right to be concerned about the number of different parties fighting in Syria.

Angela Davis

In the 1970s, the American civil rights activist, scholar and author was a major figure in the movement for the rights of political prisoners. She remains an eloquent and outspoken activist to this day. We caught up with her in Vienna to get her thoughts on refugees, racism in the US and the first black president.

Angela Davis will be speaking publicly at events on Tuesday in the Austrian Parliament, and on Wednesday at the University for Applied Arts.
