As much as I love Captain Jack Sparrow, it's probably not too surprising that a movie based on an amusement park ride might not be the most reliable source for a realistic portrayal of pirates.

That's okay though, because there are all sorts of other ways to find out some interesting things.
Like reading history books. Although they might not be too reliable for other reasons.
You could also trust other people on the internet, which is probably not the most sensible thing to do either, but might at least provide an alternative perspective.
So for those of you who might be interested in the rather utopian aspects of some pirate culture, and think things like participatory democracy, equal rights, and fair distribution of wealth sound almost exciting as running around in cool clothes yelling "Yarrrr!" does, I present this:
