The first Obama-Putin meeting for two years highlighted the agreements, and the differences on their stances on Syria

With pressure building for a political solution to the Syrian civil war, Presidents Putin and Obama seem to be considering a coordinated strategy.

The sticking point so far is Syria's President Assad. The US wants him out of the picture, while Russia is still supporting his regime with military hardware.

Analyst, Shashank Joshi considers the common interests and differences between Russia and the USA.

Shell withdraws from Arctic

Shell has announced it is to pull out of its exploration work off the Alaskan coast, saying there is insufficient oil to make drilling worthwhile. Greenpeace, however, says the oil giant is bowing to public pressure. Lukas Meus of Greenpeace explains the group's standpoint.

Evidence of flowing salt water on Mars is renewing speculation on the chances of life existing on the red planet.

While it has long been believed that Mars had plentiful water in the past, new images from NASA satellites suggest liquid water occurs today on the planet.

Nepal plans to restrict access to Everest

Nepal says it wants to limit mountaineering on Everest to experienced climbers only. Once the exclusive province of elite mountaineers, Everest is now the destination for hundreds of amateur climbers every year, many of whom are ill prepared and under qualified to take on the gruelling conditions.

Austrian climbing legend, Peter Habeler, explains why restricting access is a much needed change to the current policy.
