Today's Webtip: Online Advertising

It turns out there some might be something worse than ad-blockers.

Apple's announcement that it would be allowing third party developers to release ad-blockers cause quite a bit of hand-wringing round the net. While some journalists could understand that people might not appreciate having their battery killed and their bandwidth eaten by increasingly aggressive mobile advertising, most of them were still more concerned about the trouble an increased use of ad-blockers would cause to their business models.

But anyone who has spent some time in the industry, or is vaguely familiar with the structures of the online advertising machine, probably won't be too surprised by what an article on bloomberg.com has to say. Because it turns out that a good portion of advertising that is being payed for never even gets seen by a human. People are getting charged for it, money is changing hands, clicks and views being counted, but no consumer had any contact with the content.

I wonder which is worse, an ad impression that isn't registered because of an ad-blocker, or an ad impression that is registered and paid for but never actually viewed?

I guess it depends on which one happens more often...
