Today's Webtip: The Doomsday Seed Vault

Has seen its first withdrawal due to the war in Syria.

The seed vault was built in 2008, designed to keep crucial crop seeds safe and ready to replant following a natural or man-made disaster. The first disaster has now happened.

Researchers who had previously been based in Aleppo, but moved to Beirut to avoid the conflict, have found themselves cut off from their own stash of drought resistant seeds. Seeds they had also deposited in the Doomsday Seed Vault.
