Today's Webtip: Smartphones and refugees
Have you ever read comments on stories on refugees and come across the poster who is absolutely appalled that so many have smartphones? It's one of those themes that keeps popping up and always manages to raise my blood-pressure.
It becomes particularly maddening when one learns just how much of a positive impact that technology has had on the extremely difficult situations refugees already face.
Aside from the obvious benefits of being able to stay in contact with friends and family spread out across the planet, the use of smartphones and social networking has had an added benefit of reducing the financial impact refugees are faced with when fleeing their countries.
The New York times has an eye-opening article about the ways refugees are using technology to aid in their flight, and it's a rather interesting read.
