Today's Webtip: Big Bird Data
nautil.us has a rather fascinating article up about the use of big data and heavy computation to learn about the migratory habits of birds.
Actually, they are going beyond raw number crunching and radar analysis into the realm of A.I. Self learning A.I.
Bubo is a virtual machine at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Bubo looks at radar images from weather stations and tries to figure out what is happening in them. Because Bubo is looking for birds.
Apparently people didn't used to know that birds flew at night. But now they do, and are trying hard to use decades worth of collected data to go back and find out more about the migratory habits of birds by analysing those images. Since it is the type of work that is very slow going for people, and difficult to find enough volunteers for, scientists have decided to use their datasets, machine learning and A.I. to make sense of it.
