Reality Check: Republican nomination candidates in TV debate; why Mexico is losing the "Drugs War"

Republican debate

Today sees the first televised debate between the top 10 Republican candidates for the presidential nomination.

Of the 17 declared candidates, 7 will not take part, and it's generally thought that missing out on this debate will eliminate them from the race.

The top 10 include representatives from all platforms and positions in the party, and this is their first opportunity to set out their stalls in a nationwide broadcast.

People continue to criticise the government's failure to satisfactorily resolve the case of 43 missing students who vanished last year.

Mexico's "drug war" has officially been going on for 9 years, and the situation continues to deteriorate.

The number of drug cartels continues to rise, and the battles between them give rise to horrific violence that touches all parts of society.
