Traiskirchen: Amnesty Int'l wants to investigate

Reality Check: Heinz Patzelt & Marianne Schulze on the Amnesty request; a look at hunting and conservation in the wake of the killing of Cecil the lion.

Traiskirchen

It’s not something that happens very often in a western European country: Amnesty International asking for permission to access a facility like the reception centre for asylum seekers at Traiskirchen, to assess whether human rights failings are taking place.

It’s a sign the government needs support to address the challenges which have led to the current situation. "Overcrowding" might be described as an understatement, given that 4,500 people are now in a facility equipped to accommodate 1,800.

At the same time, the political debate is focussing a suggestion of a kind of "limited asylum" as a solution to the high influx of migrants.

Explanations and perspectives from the head of the Austrian office of Amnesty International, Heinz Patzelt, and human rights consultant Marianne Schulze:

Update: the interior ministry gave Amnesty International the permission to enter the reception centre in Traiskirchen.

Cecil the Lion

Cecil was a 13 year-old lion living on a wildlife reservation park in Zimbabwe, popular with tourists from the entire world who travelled to Africa to shoot wildlife with their cameras.

Walter Palmer is a dentist from the mid-western American state of Minnesota who shot and killed Cecil and is now himself a target – of worldwide outrage.

Palmer is an active big-game hunter with many kills to his name. He says he was unaware at the time of hunting Cecil that the lion was protected and that he relied on his guides to ensure a legal hunt.
