Today's Webtip: Applefy

And other ways of getting playlists from one service to another.

Well, it's been about a month since Apple's streaming music service has gone live. Long enough to get a feel for what it can do, but not long enough for the problems to be ironed out.

Although some of the problems are getting a little less wrinkly, I guess.

Playlist imports for example. Most of the other streaming services have been available long enough that there are all sorts of ways to shovel your collections around. Apple didn't seem to have any easy way to do that at first, but it wasn't hard enough to keep a few adventurous types from finding a way.

Two weeks ago the pickins were slim, but now there are enough that are also easy to use to make it worth mentioning a few.

The first (and only one I have tried so far) that made it a bit easier was Applefy. It basically reads your Spotify lists and then makes a bunch of fake mp3's which you can then import into iTunes and use that to make playlists on your computer. These lists will then get matched with tracks available on the service and you can use them wherever you want. It has one catch though. You need a premium Spotify account. And a Mac. I guess that would be two catches.

Those without a Mac can try to use the python script that it is based on, but I think I am not going to make any promises about success or ease of use.

There are other options (for Mac users), but right now it looks like the best alternative to Applefy is a catchily named service called Maciej’s Playlist Importer. That one has a few advantages, biggest among them is that it can import Deezer as well as Spotify. It also has one disadvantage. It might be a bit unstable. As in, don't even bump your computer while it is doing its thing unstable.

For those who want to check out a few other alternatives, you can read this article at ifun.de.

In the meantime I will continue to keep my eye out for Windows based options. Because there just has to be a better solution somewhere...
