Today's Webtip: On Death Road
Refugees have gotten a lot of press the last couple of months. Or, rather, Europeans reactions to refugees.
But it is a long way from IS occupied territory to Europe, and most of those fleeing never make it that far.
Shalaw Mohammed has written a story about people trying to flee Hawija in Iraq. It's not a terribly long piece, but it manages to give a glimpse into the difficulties people face, the options they have, and the difficulties non IS areas face when dealing with the smugglers bringing people across the lines.
On Death Road: Civilians Flee Extremist Rule in Hawija, Dodging Checkpoints And Frontlines.
I found that story thanks to juancole.com, who also included a video that is worth watching. It's a teaser for a longer program from Channel 4 featuring cell phone footage taken from inside occupied areas.
