Today's Webtip: Landfillharmonic

A little bit of feels from a landfill in Paraguay

There is a town in Paraguay that is complete trash. Literally. It is the site of a landfill, and the town consists primarily of landfill workers who scour the rubbish for potentially useful items to be recycled or resold.

It's not the greatest place on the planet to be a kid. Or a parent.

But it has gotten a little bit better.

While working on a recycling project in the town, Favio Chávez thought it might be good for the kids if they could learn music. So he started teaching them. But instruments were a problem, so together with a trash technician and garbage genius named Cola, the started making instruments for the kids to play on. Violins, contrabass, saxophones, drums...

All made of items salvaged form the dump. The project was quite a success and has ended up touring the world in support of a film about the project.

You can find some more videos form the orchestra, including a few live performances and a lovely solo piece on their YouTube channel.
