Today's Webtip: Racism in the U.S. - Old and New

A look at the meaning behind the confederate flag brouhaha.

When I first got to Austria, I was amazed at how often I would see the confederate flag here. I wasn't so surprised to see it being used by certain types who like other questionable symbols, but there were quite a few wearing it who weren't really the lynching type.

I used to ask them about it. The explanations I received were interesting, and showed just how effective the southern process of whitewashing history had been.

Those of you who have been wondering why it was a big deal that the Governor of South Carolina decided to take the confederate flag down from the government building might appreciate a little explanation. That explanation involves revisionism, Verharmlosung, and Wiederbetätigung after the civil war in the U.S.

It's good that this issue is finally being dealt with, but it's sad that it took so long and required something as horrible as that shooting to make it happen.
