Today's Webtip: Wings University
Becoming a refugee is a frightening thought. Aside from the emotional and physical turmoil of being put in a situation of having to leave your home country, refugees face potential hostility abroad, uncertain living circumstances, a sad lack of future financial prospects and a disruption of personal and professional development.
The technological revolution can't do very much to address most of those issues, and the one area that it could change has been sadly lacking in one important area so far. Accreditation. Online learning has seen massive developments in the last few years, with courses being offered by a mix of private initiatives and major universities. But so far, the dream of an easily accessible and academically recognised free online degree hasn't quite materialised.
Not yet anyway.
It is in development though. Markus Kressler, a student in Berlin, has started the wheels rolling on a project to help refugees (and anyone else) get and complete their online education.
Vice has an interview with Markus here and you can keep track of the developments and find out more about the project at their website wings.university.
