2015 has been dubbed a “Superwahljahr” for Austria, because four elections for state assemblies are being held. On Sunday people in Styria and Burgenland went to the polls, and delivered a slap in the face to the main two parties, the SPÖ and the ÖVP. The FPÖ was the big winner, nearly trebling its share of the vote in Styria.

The results of both elections raise important questions for the future of politics at the regional level, with elections coming up later this year in Vienna and Upper Austria, as well as for the national parties. We discuss these questions with Eva Linsinger, head of the political section of the weekly magazine Profil:
