The military could stop boats, but not migrants

Military action on migrant boats, Nuclear non-proliferation, Greece EU, South Africa's great divide, being a blogger.

The EU is proposing military attacks in Libya to target migrant trafficking networks and will seek UN Security Council approval today. However, such a mission would be fraught with difficulties and potential for escalation, and even if military action stops the boats, it won't stop the people trying to flee conflict areas.

The proposed military action might destroy the boats, but won't stem the tide of migrants waiting to leave Libya for Europe.

Military analyst, Paul Beaver, considers what such a mission can achieve, and why this is so different from the militarily similar intervention against Somali pirates.
