Today's Webtip: AVA

a little bit of northern California to go.

Newsweek claims that the Anderson Valley Advertiser is the looniest newspaper in America. The Anderson Valley Advertiser itself claims to be the last newspaper in America.

Both claims are obviously false, but only one is actually forgivable. It's quite obvious the Newsweek reporter hasn't had a true taste of the American Lunatic Fringe.

Their claim DID catch my eye though, and I'm rather thankful for that. Because the AVA is fun. It makes me homesick. It reminds me of the way things always seemed to be but probably never were, back in the days with a man with a printing press and an eye for justice could hold the rich and powerful to task for crimes against the rest of us...

OK, that might be a bit much, but AVA is jam packed with attitude and coverage of local news. Coverage that actually makes local news seem interesting and vital. Even when it's not my local news.

Besides, how many local news outlets could believably be the home to an undercover Thomas Pynchon?
