Today's Webtip: Pot Cookies

How web-tracking technology was used to pass pot legislation.

Remember when cookies were a big thing?

Back when everyone was talking about them and their potential for abuse? When it was easy to find guides on how to get rid of them, or warnings about what they might contain?

It seems like ages ago. And it seems like a battle that was lost. It's hard to imagine the web the way we have it without some form of user tracking. It still gets talked about, but unless we are freaking out about the NSA or some recent changes to Facebooks AGB's it's pretty much a done deal.

A perfect time for politics to jump on the technology.

I have to admit, I'm a bit torn on the subject. As much as I like the idea of using big data for research and science, the thought of political parties being able to get pretty detailed, potentially identifying info on me and my political or personal leanings makes me a bit nervous.

But it's happening. Has happened. In the States. And it was used to get marijuana legalised in Alaska and Oregon. The same tech was used for the campaign in Florida as well, but the legislation didn't go through.
