Today's Webtip: Streaming Meanies

Techdirt breaks down the numbers in the streaming music business.

It's been quite some time since artists have had a go at all of the fans stealing their music. Part of the reason for that might have been the fact that piracy has become increasingly unpopular as legitmate sources for digital music files become available. Streaming services have seen an enormous growth in the last few years and provide a very viable solution to old-school file sharing. A solution that actually puts money in the pockets of artists and labels alike.

That doesn't mean artists have been happy with the current state of things though. Last year saw quite a few artists being very vocal about their dissatisfaction with the amount of money they receive from streaming sites.

Something that probably wasn't too surprising to anyone that has been following the music business. What was surprising, was the fact that the artists were blaming the services themselves.

And it turns out their anger might have been misdirected.

www.techdirt.com has an article featuring numbers released by a french record label trade group, SNEP.

The results should be interesting for artists and fans alike.

One fact that was missing from that article is pretty important. A little bit of information on who some major investors in those services are.
