Meeting in the middle
As expected, the far left, anti-austerity Syriza party romped home in the Greek elections - not just winning by far the largest share of the votes, but almost securing an absolute majority. While everyone had expected them to win, few had expected it to be quite so resounding.

A coalition, it seems was already in the pipeline - but Alexis Tsipras' choice of coalition partner is raising a few eyebrows. Wanting to work with another party that is new to government, he has chosen the far right, ultra conservative Independent Greeks.
So what do the far left and the far right in Greece have in common? Very little, apart from a shared aversion to austerity measures.
However, while both parties might claim to be vehemently anti-austerity, in reality, the new Greek government is going to have to compromise and move a little towards the centre, because at the end of the day, the country is dependent upon EU money.

Tsipras has been talking "debt forgiveness", which is unlikely to happen, not least because of the precedent it would set for other struggling Eurozone countries. However, some sort of deal will have to be struck.

Asylum process changes
