Today's Webtip: World Aids Day

Things have gotten better, but there is much more to be done.

I can still remember the first time I heard about the AIDS epidemic. It was sometime during my 6th year of school. I didn't have any of the basic knowledge needed to make sense of what I was hearing and the images that my 12 year old brain pieced together to try to make sense of it are still with me. The only thing I knew for sure was that there was something new to be afraid of.

Things didn't improve too much during my teen years. Sex-education was basically nonexistent in my midwest high school, awareness programs only something for the coasts, and, although the media stories about HIV and AIDS increased, my understanding of the subject didn't. The fear, on the other hand, did.

Things have certainly changed.

The most recent report from UNAIDS is hopeful but cautious. The numbers of infections and people with access to medication have improved, and discrimination is down, but there is still much to be done.

You can find out what, why and how at a few sites.
