Today's Webtip: First Demo
Ian MacKaye has to be one of my favorite musicians. I've been a fan since my hardcore days, and unlike many of my childhood idols, the more I learned about him, the more I respected him.
His band Fugazi just managed to take that all to w hole new level. They also almost took me to the hospital, after I made the sily mistake of trying to film a sold out Fugazi show at the Arena and nearly got flattened by the audience pressing me up against the stage. Ian invited me to film the rest from the stage, and I managed to get a safe spot on top of the speakers to put the rest of the show on tape.
It was glorious.
And so is their First Demo. 11 songs recorded after a mere 10 live gigs, it includes early versions of songs that would later be released officially. Those of you have have ever heard Waiting Room on infinite playback really need to check out this early version. It's like looking at the high school yearbook picture of friends you met later in life. The elements are all there, they just come together a bit differently.
