The prize this year is shared between two children’s rights activists: Malala Yousafzai from Pakistan (who is particularly concerned with the education of women) and Kailash Satyarthi from India who has been active in the area child labour and child slavery. In October 2012 Malala survived being shot in the head by a Taliban gunman while on her way to school in the Swat District of North West Pakistan.

On a day where an Indian and a Pakistani are announced joint winners of the Nobel Peace Prize we look at the renewed violence between India and Pakistan in the disputed Kashmir region. The clashes are the worst in years and come at a time when both governments say they want to improve ties and even solve the conflict.
