Today's Webtip: Ello

Another attempt at breaking away from Facebook.

Social networking is huge. It's pretty obvious that people really want and enjoy having an easy centralized way of keeping in touch with friends and family. Facebook has over 1 billion users. Thats ... staggering.

Unfortunately, Facebook seems to have prioritized advertisers needs over their users needs, which means it has become more and more difficult to actually see what your friends are doing. Add to that the problems with their identity and privacy policy, and the fact that you can't really organize any of the content you or your friends generate. So it would seem as though the potential for a truly user friendly social networking sight would be massive.

Another shot

People certainly have tried before. Remember Diaspora? That one didn't quite take off, but it hasn't dissuaded people from taking another shot. One of the most recent potential alternatives is Ello.

Put together by a group of artists, designers and technicians that believe your information should belong to you, they have set up a site that promises to not sell your information to advertisers. They have also taken advantage of the identity policy flap that angered the LGBT community to gain some early traction.

The Guardian has an article about the site and there are a few video reviews available.

It's a start

Ello seems a bit buggy, is far from feature complete and leaves a lot to wish for. But it's a start, I guess.

It is invite only right now, although you can request an invite at the site. I also have three invites I could give away right now, so the first three users to post an invite request will get one. Just leave a comment.
