Today's Webtip: The Math of Music

TED Ed explains how Beethoven was able to do what he did

I was one of those lucky kids who got to go to a school that included instrument lessons and orchestras as part of the curriculum. That meant I not only got to learn how to play an instrument, but I also got to spend time in school practicing and being taught stuff like music theory.

I don't know if any of my non-musical classmates had a chance to learn about the math behind music, but I sincerely doubt it. It may have been mentioned in some maths classes but since I took all of those as well I am pretty certain it never went much beyond "Well, music is math".

And that is basically what TED Ed's video does here. But it has one thing I know we didn't have. Nifty animated graphics including sound that do a pretty good jump of getting the basic idea across in a way that might just convince people to explore a little bit more.

And if you want to, you can go to ed.ted.com and pick up some further information in the form of a basic leeson plan and lots of useful links.
