Part of the fun of being a film freak is recognizing the references one film makes to another. It's a nifty little side effect of film literacy, something that can apply to almost any kind of media.
It's also something that has been taken to a whole new level by Kim Albrecht. Now you can go back and double check references you might have caught, find some you missed, and get a massive overview of 100 years of films referencing each other.
