Today's Webtip: Pixlr

the online photo editor is now available as a desktop app

Good news for anyone looking to make some quick correction to their photos! Actually it's pretty good news for anyone who wants a very inexpensive alternative to the usual suspects in photoediting software. It's even a pretty good deal compared to the notoriously free GIMP.

Pixlr, the little online photo editor that could, has now gone offline. It's available for Windows and MacOS, and frees you from the need to be connected.

This is a great thing for anyone looking for quick adjustments and effects, but it might be bad news for general trends in software development. Although the basic program is free, Austodesk has decided that in order to get access to masking tools users should pay a subscription. It doesn't, howver make it very clear just what you get for your money.

So the dektop version basically gives you a glorified instagram style effects editor, while the online version provides an almost full editing experience including layers and selections.
