Today's Webtip: Microwave Thrusters

NASA validates a drive that might mean a leap forward in space travel.

Interesting times for space geeks and other types who want to get on with the colonization of the galaxy. According to WIRED, NASA has validated a drive that could revolutionize space craft development.

The EmDrive converts electric power into thrust. It does so without the need for propellant, which could reduce the amount of mass needed for spacecraft. That in turn changes the time needed for things like flights to Mars.

The idea sounds nifty, and a lot of people really want it to work, but there is one little problem. It appears to break some of those pesky fundamental laws of physics. So the fact that Chinese researchers and now NASA have shown that the idea seems to work is a pretty big deal.

Since I'm not a science journalist, I'm going to stop right now and send you off to someone who is. Go read the article at www.wired.co.uk
