The Libyan government is reported to be considering asking for international assistance to help re-establish security. Heavy fighting between rival militias has forced the closure of the country’s main airport in Tripoli, and officials say 90 per cent of the planes parked there have been destroyed by shelling. Privacy campaigners in Britain are concerned about new legislation on data retention being rushed through parliament this week. They say the new law, which comes in the wake of a ruling by the European Court of Justice that blanket data surveillance breaches the right to privacy actually expands the government’s surveillance powers.
