Today's Webtip: Punk Pics

An inside look at ancient underground culture.

In the summers of 1983 and 84 I was producing a punk fanzine and all age concerts. I was 14 when I started, and the main reason I did it was to be able to see some shows. At the time most concerts were taking place in bars, and it was extremely difficult for teenagers to get in. Not just difficult, it was usually illegal.

The whole thing ended badly when my parents discovered my stash of production cash. They were convinced it was drug money, things got crazy and it all ended in the longest grounding of my young life.

The only thing I regret was not planning better when it came to documentation. I saved most of my fliers and articles, but it never occurred to me to get photos. I didn't even have a camera. I did have an older friend who was a photographer and took photos at the shows, but I never thought to ask for copies.

This are sooooooo much better now.

Despite a lack of camera phones and decent lowlight photography options, a lot of pics were taken. Now those photographers have been scanning old pics and making them available for young and old alike, a window into a world that even a lot of us who were there at the time have never seen.

www.cvltnation.com has a couple of posts featuring photos from those days. The days when Henry Rollins might have been mistaken for a scrawny hippy.
