US Secretary of State John Kerry is holding talks on Monday with his Iranian counterpart Mohammed Javad Zarif. The discussions are expected to be “serious and lengthy” and Kerry’s aim is to “gauge Iran's willingness to make the critical choices it needs to make”, according to an official. The meeting comes with barely a week to go before a July 20 deadline for a deal to be struck on Iran’s controversial nuclear programme. Shashank Joshi analyses what’s at stake:
