Last week Ukrainian president Petro Poroschenko was promising to hold cease-fire talks with the separatists in east Ukraine. This week a series of military successes by the Ukrainian army seems to have caused a change of mind in Kiev and, having driving the separatists out of Sloviansk, the army is now closing in on the remaining rebels who have dug in in the city of Donezk.

German toll roads

Germany’s plan to introduce a toll system on all of its roads that will only affect foreign drivers is causing controversy in the EU. Germany’s roads are in urgent need of repair but the estimated 600 million Euros the new toll system is expected to raise is nowhere near the 7.5 billion Euros Germany needs to invest each year in its infrastructure and it is still unclear whether the plan conforms to EU law.
