Today's Webtip: Respekt!
I guess I'm a Gutmensch. Which is okay, because it seems silly to want to think of yourself as a Bösmensch.
I mention this because if there is one thing I have learned from Austrian online forums is that people who don't like discrimination always seem to get tagged with the term.
Gutmensch. It seems like the people who use it have something against values like tolerance and respect. The types of people who get more upset at the fact that someone somewhere said they shouldn't use the term Indio than at the injustices indigenous populations suffer. People who demand respect for themselves but aren't willing to offer that respect to others.
I have been called worse. As have most of the people who might have a different skin color, religious belief, gender orientation or sexuality than the majority.
One story I learned about last year took place in Germany. It resulted in a project called Respekt!
The initiative has moved from fighting racism on the pitch to the workplace, and quite a few people have taken up the banner and done things to help spread the message. Irie Révoltés for example.
Judging by things I have been coming across in my feeds this last week, there is still a lot of work to do.
